Komboloi (Worry Beads)

Komboloi (Worry Beads)

$27.00Price

Komboloi, also know as Worry Beads, come from Greek and Cypriot culture.  These beads are used for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to:

  • Counting prayers
  • A gadget to fidget with
  • Guarding against bad luck
  • A fun fashion accessory
  • Relaxation

Some people have even said that keeping their hands occupied with Komboloi helped them stop smoking!

Each set is custom made when you place your order, and our polyester cord is braided by hand so we can ensure its durability. We make the cord as thick as possible, but cord thickness depends on the bead-hole size, so the cord thickness will vary.

  • First created by monks in order to help count their prayers, Worry Beads are now mostly used for reasons ranging from cosmetic to fidget-spinner-replacement. The word "Komboloi" is said to come from the Greek word for "prayer rope" by some, but others says it is a shortened version of the Greek phrase for "In every knot I say a prayer".

Komboloi have 2 main sections: the body (has the majority of the beads, and might be able to fit around your wrist), and the tail. The tail has 2 main beads: the "Priest" bead (usually the largest bead) and the "Shield" bead (which seperates the Priest bead from the beads in the body). Many also have a tassel at the end of the tail, but not all versions do (ours do not, but they are very pretty, and we may add them in the future).

The body consists of anywhere from 9 to 33 beads (either a prime number, or a multiple of 4 plus 1), and are often made of natural amber, crystal gemstones, or other beads made from hardended organic material. Additionally, the length (from the tip of the tail to the top of the body) is about 2 palm widths.
